Before Starting Red Light Therapy: What You Need to Know

You have done the research. You understand the science. You are ready to start your red light therapy ritual.

But before your first session, there are a few things worth knowing. What to expect in the beginning, what to avoid, and how to set yourself up for the best possible results on melanin-rich skin.

Here is everything you need to know.

Set your expectations correctly

Red light therapy is not an overnight treatment. It is a cellular-level intervention that works gradually through consistent use. Understanding this from the start will save you frustration and help you stay consistent long enough to see real results.

Here is what a realistic timeline looks like for melanin-rich skin.

In the first two weeks you are unlikely to see visible changes. What is happening beneath the surface is significant, but your skin needs time to accumulate the light energy required for structural change. Some users notice improved skin hydration or a subtle brightness during this period.

Between weeks three and four, most users begin to notice improved skin texture and a more even radiance. Your skin may feel smoother and look slightly more luminous after sessions.

Between weeks six and eight, visible reduction in hyperpigmentation and dark spots begins for most users. Post-inflammatory marks from breakouts will start to fade noticeably. Skin firmness and definition may also begin to improve.

Between weeks eight and twelve, the full results of consistent use become clear. Significantly reduced dark spots, more even skin tone, improved firmness and the natural glow that comes from genuinely healthier skin at a cellular level.

Commit to twelve weeks before making a final assessment. That is what the science recommends and that is what the results require.

Before your first session

Cleanse your face thoroughly before every session. Remove all makeup, sunscreen, oils and skincare products. Your skin needs to be completely clean for the light to penetrate the skin effectively. Any barrier on the surface reduces the efficacy of the treatment.

Do not use retinol, AHA, BHA or strong vitamin C serums immediately before a session. These ingredients can cause photosensitivity and may reduce the effectiveness of the light therapy. Use these actives in the morning instead and save your evening routine for your Lumara session.

Apply your niacinamide serum immediately before putting on the mask. This is the optimal window. Red light therapy temporarily increases skin permeability, meaning the serum will penetrate deeper and work more effectively during and immediately after your session.

During your session

Select the Red and Near-Infrared mode. This is the most clinically validated combination for melanin-rich skin, targeting both the surface-level hyperpigmentation with 630nm red light and the deeper collagen and inflammation issues with 850nm near-infrared.

Set your timer to 15 minutes. This is the optimal session duration for the Lumara mask. It delivers approximately 21 J/cm² of light energy, within the clinically recommended therapeutic window and well below any threshold where adverse effects have been documented for melanin-rich skin.

You can use this time however you choose. Meditate, listen to a podcast, read or simply rest. The mask does the work. You just need to stay still.

After your session

Apply your moisturiser immediately after removing the mask. Your skin is warm and maximally receptive in the minutes following a session. This is the ideal window for your most nourishing skincare products.

Avoid harsh or active skincare products for at least one hour after your session. Your skin barrier is temporarily more open following treatment. Introduce any new products carefully during this period.

Do not skip your SPF the following morning. Sun exposure after red light therapy does not cause any adverse effects, but UV exposure worsens hyperpigmentation regardless of what treatments you are using. SPF every morning is non-negotiable for anyone treating dark spots.

Common questions from first-time users

Will I feel anything during the session? Most users feel a gentle warmth from the mask. You should not feel any pain, stinging or significant heat. If you do, increase the distance between the mask and your skin or reduce the session duration.

Can I use the mask every day? The Lumara protocol recommends three sessions per week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Daily use is not harmful but it does not accelerate results significantly. Your skin benefits from the rest days between sessions to process the cellular changes triggered by each treatment.

Can I use it around my eyes? The Lumara mask has openings for the eyes. Keep your eyes open or closed as comfortable. The light wavelengths used in red light therapy at therapeutic doses are safe for the skin around the eyes and may help with dark circles and fine lines in this area.

What if I miss a session? Missing one session will not undo your progress. Simply continue with your next scheduled session. What matters most is your consistency over 8 to 12 weeks, not perfection within any single week.

Can I use the mask if I am pregnant? Consult your doctor before using any light therapy device during pregnancy. While red light therapy has not been shown to be harmful in pregnancy, there is insufficient clinical data specifically on pregnant women to make a definitive recommendation.

Building your complete routine

For the best results on melanin-rich skin, the Lumara protocol works most effectively as part of a complete skincare approach.

In the morning, cleanse gently, apply vitamin C serum if you use one, followed by moisturiser and SPF 30 or higher. This protects your skin during the day and prevents UV-induced hyperpigmentation from undoing your evening progress.

In the evening on your Lumara days, cleanse thoroughly, apply niacinamide serum, use the Lumara mask for 15 minutes in Red and Near-Infrared mode, then apply moisturiser.

On your non-Lumara evenings, cleanse, apply your treatment serums such as retinol or AHA if you use them, and moisturise.

This routine gives you the anti-inflammatory and melanin-modulating benefits of red light therapy three times per week, while still allowing space for other proven skincare actives on your rest days.

The most important thing

The most important thing about starting red light therapy is starting consistently and staying consistent.

The science is clear. The protocol is simple. The results are real. But they require time and commitment to reveal themselves.

Monday. Wednesday. Friday. 15 minutes.

That is all it takes. Start tonight.
