Monday. Wednesday. Friday.
Three evenings a week. Fifteen minutes each time.
That is the Lumara ritual. Simple, consistent, and built around the science of what melanin-rich skin actually needs.
Why consistency matters more than intensity
Red light therapy works through a process called photobiomodulation. Each session activates your mitochondria, stimulates collagen production and modulates melanin activity at the cellular level.
But this is not a one-session miracle. The changes happen gradually, session by session, as your cells accumulate the light energy they need to repair, regenerate and glow.
Think of it like exercise. One session at the gym does something. But three sessions a week, over six to eight weeks, transforms your body. Red light therapy works exactly the same way.
The research confirms this. Harvard Medical School found that improvements in collagen density and skin texture were maintained at three months of follow-up, suggesting that consistent use creates durable structural change, not a temporary effect.
Why three times a week?
Clinical studies consistently recommend three to five sessions per week for optimal results. Three times per week hits the sweet spot of efficacy and sustainability.
More is not always better. Your skin needs time between sessions to process the cellular changes triggered by each treatment. Monday, Wednesday and Friday gives your skin exactly that rhythm.
Why 15 minutes?
Each 15-minute session at the Lumara recommended settings delivers approximately 21 J/cm² of light energy. This falls within the clinically recommended therapeutic window of 1 to 20 J/cm² per session.
At this dose, you get all the benefits of photobiomodulation without the risk of overdosing. More time per session does not accelerate results. Consistency does.
The complete Lumara ritual
Step 1. Cleanse your face thoroughly. Remove all makeup, sunscreen and skincare products. Your skin needs to be clean for the light to penetrate optimally.
Step 2. Apply your niacinamide serum. Two to three drops, gently pressed into the skin. The red light therapy will enhance the absorption and efficacy of the serum, driving it deeper into the dermis.
Step 3. Put on the Lumara mask. Select the Red and Near-Infrared mode, combining 630nm and 850nm. This is the most clinically proven combination for hyperpigmentation and collagen stimulation on melanin-rich skin. Set the timer to 15 minutes. Lie back, relax and let the light work.
Step 4. Remove the mask. Your skin is now primed for maximum absorption. Apply your moisturiser immediately while your skin is still warm and receptive.
Step 5. Rest. The cellular repair process continues for hours after each session. Avoid harsh skincare products, exfoliants or active ingredients immediately after your session.
What to use with your Lumara mask
The niacinamide pairing is the most powerful combination for melanin-rich skin. Niacinamide inhibits the transfer of melanin to skin cells at the surface. Red and near-infrared light modulates melanin production at the cellular level. Together they address hyperpigmentation from two directions simultaneously.
What to use: a niacinamide serum at 5 to 10% concentration. The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% and Zinc is widely available in South Africa at Clicks and Dis-Chem and works beautifully with the Lumara protocol.
What to avoid: retinol, AHA, BHA and vitamin C immediately before your session. These ingredients can cause photosensitivity and reduce the efficacy of the treatment. Use them in the morning instead.
When will you see results?
Every skin is different. But based on clinical evidence and the experience of red light therapy users worldwide, here is what to expect.
Within 2 to 4 weeks you will notice improved skin radiance, a more even texture and a natural glow that builds session by session.
Within 6 to 8 weeks you will see visible reduction in hyperpigmentation and dark spots. Post-inflammatory marks from breakouts will begin to fade noticeably.
Within 8 to 12 weeks the full results become clear. Firmer skin, more even tone, significantly reduced dark spots and the kind of glow that people notice.
Making it a ritual, not a routine
A routine is something you do. A ritual is something you look forward to.
We designed the Lumara protocol to be a moment of care, not a chore. Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, 15 minutes for yourself, for your skin, for your glow.
Some of our community members listen to a podcast during their session. Others meditate. Others simply lie back in the quiet and let the light do its work.
Whatever makes these 15 minutes yours, that is the Lumara ritual.
